John was my Great Uncle. I didn’t see much of John when growing up but i have heard lots of stories about him being a kind and energetic man from my Dad who loved him very much. It was a pleasure to spend time with John at Nick’s wedding and all our family were grateful and impressed at the effort that he put into getting there on the hottest day of the year! John reminded me of my Grandparents from the North East who I miss dearly and his voice and presence reminded me of them.

It was always hugely entertaining spending time with John. John was my Great Uncle, so it was special hearing stories of him growing up with my Granny. He was a key link to memories of my Grandparents and the North-East. I enjoyed seeing the sparkle in John’s eye as he recounted stories of his own sporting prowess; and he was always quick to offer a thorough and astute appraisal of both Sunderland and Southend FC’s form. Despite being in his 80s, John navigated his way across London alone to attend my wedding in 2014. We have some great memories of him from the day, where he endeared himself to many who were meeting him for the first time. He was a top man with an energy and positivity right through to the last time I saw him. RIP.
